Downtown Wheaton is up for “Best Downtown Atmosphere” in the 2025 Daily Herald Readers’ Choice Awards. Vote today to show your support for Wheaton!

On Thursday, June 12, the Wheaton Municipal Band kicked off its 96th season at Memorial Park in downtown Wheaton. For this Opening Gala, students from Wheaton middle school bands joined the Wheaton Municipal Band in a unique side-by-side performance. Noah Taylor, arranger and composer for the West Point Band, attended the show as they performed several of his works honoring the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army on June 14.
Widely regarded as one of the finest bands of its kind in the country, the Wheaton Municipal Band, led by Dr. Bruce Moss, captivates audiences with its remarkable sound and exceptional musicianship.
Talented musicians from across Chicagoland audition for a position in the band. Each week, they rehearse new music on Wednesday in preparation for their Thursday evening performance. Every concert offers a unique experience, showcasing the challenges and excitement of performing fresh repertoire with an 89-piece concert band.
These free concerts are made possible through a partnership between the City of Wheaton, the Wheaton Park District, the WMB Board, and the Friends of the Wheaton Municipal Band. Slow down time for a few moments each week while you enjoy live music in the scenic surroundings of Memorial Park.
Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., but arrive early to enjoy a picnic in the park or grab some popcorn or ice cream from the Friends of the Wheaton Municipal Band.
All performances are on Thursday evenings, except for Wednesday, July 2, and Saturday, July 26, which will be held at Edman Chapel (the only indoor concert of the season).

At this week’s City of Wheaton Council meeting, Mayor Phil Suess presented an Earth Year 2025 proclamation to Ted Witte, the Environmental Improvement Commission Chair. The proclamation honored the 55th Annual Earth Day celebration and recognized the commission’s ongoing efforts to enhance and protect our local environment. Thank you to Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission for the tireless work you do all year long and your dedication to this vital effort!
In honor of serving two terms on the Wheaton City Council, the City honored outgoing Councilman Michael Barbier on April 21 with a proclamation. The City celebrated/commemorated his active participation on the Council and his engagement with local businesses and residents of the City of Wheaton. The City thanks Councilman Barbier for his dedicated service since 2017 to the Wheaton community. Read the proclamation on the City’s website.
At the May 5 City Council Meeting, the City of Wheaton will welcome its elected officials who were selected by voters during the April 1 consolidated election. Wheaton voters selected the following district representatives for the Wheaton City Council:
North District – Councilman Scott A. Brown (Incumbent)
South District – Councilman Scott D. Weller (Incumbent)
East District – Councilwoman Leah Brice
West District – Councilwoman Lynn A. Robbins (Incumbent)
The Wheaton City Council consists of four district representatives, two at-large representatives and the mayor. Only the four district seats were up for election.
In Wheaton’s State of the City Address, February 20, Mayor Phil Suess underscored Wheaton’s ongoing financial stability. Backing up this assertion, he shared the facts that Wheaton had a balanced budget and a sixth consecutive year without an increase in the property tax levy in 2024. He also highlighted the City’s dedication to infrastructure, citing that, in 2024, more than $30 million was allocated to roads, water systems, and stormwater management.
Mayor Suess also spoke about the growth and vibrancy of downtown Wheaton, which was voted as the “Best Downtown Atmosphere” in the Daily Herald Reader’s Choice Awards.
