GETTING TO KNOW MAYOR PHIL SUESS

Phil Suess, the Mayor of Wheaton, Illinois (first elected in 2019, re-elected in 2023), focuses on fiscal stability, while improving City services and infrastructure. His overall goal is a vibrant, strong City of Wheaton that is home to happy, energized residents, while welcoming visitors to explore all the historic City has to offer.

PHIL’S VISION FOR WHEATON

During his time serving as Mayor, Phil Suess has focused on serving Wheaton’s residents by focusing on the following principles and goals:

  • Fiscal Responsibility: Maintaining Wheaton’s strong financial position is essential to our future success. Wheaton has the resources to provide the high level of services our residents expect.
  • Public Safety: A core priority for the Mayor is supporting and enhancing public safety in our community. The City continues to expand the effectiveness and responsiveness of its public safety services by ongoing investment in people, technology, equipment, and training.
  • Infrastructure: Mayor Suess has overseen the completion of the Downtown Streetscape Project, enhancing our Downtown by providing upgraded infrastructure, wider sidewalks, more gathering spaces, and more inviting landscaping. In addition, the City continues to address significant infrastructure projects throughout Wheaton to improve our roads, sewers, and water mains.
  • Development: The City has benefited from significant private investment over the past several years. These investments have included the renovation of existing buildings in the Downtown as well as significant new construction projects across the City. Wheaton has welcomed over 40 new businesses over the past year.
  • Community Character: Maintaining the “small-town charm” of Wheaton is important to Mayor Suess. Year-round events and activities foster a welcoming environment for visitors and residents alike. Popular events in Wheaton help bring out the community and bring in additional foot traffic—all benefiting the local economy. Shared traditions help neighbors feel like family.
  • Regional Leadership: As a former President of the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (2023–24) and the incoming President (2026–27), he advocates for intergovernmental cooperation among municipalities and government entities. The Mayor continues to represent Wheaton on the DuPage Water Commission and the Illinois Police Officer Pension Investment Fund.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Before becoming mayor of Wheaton, Phil Suess served as a Wheaton City Councilman starting in 2005. He has a background as an investment consultant, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Northwestern University, a Masters of Business Administration from Loyola University of Chicago and maintains the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation from The Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts.
